The ninth month of the year

Regarding the following three sentences:

(A) September is the ninth month of the year.
(B) September is the ninth month of a year.
(C) September is the ninth month of year.

I suppose (A) is the only natural way to express this idea, but I'm not so sure. What about (B) and (C)? Do they sound very strange to native speakers?
