Would you say that if a phrase is formed with the structure "next + word denoting a time period," then the is optional? Are there some clear guidelines because I think the one I stated herein doesn't seem all encompassing.

eg,

next month

next period

next class ??

next spring ??

Use next year if you want to say "the year after the current year", use the next year if you want to say "the year after any given year except the current one".
Pastsimple's rule certainly sounds familiar, and it works. It doesn't seem to apply to the original question, though, if the difference in answers is as suggested:
