If a person's reputation precedes them, it means that you have heard a lot of rumors and stories about them before you meet them face-to-face. So you have a preconceived idea about what they will look like, how they will act and what they will say. You are prejudiced. So when you say their name, the way you say it shows your prejudice.

Well might you ask. Even after I had the context, I had to read it four times before it stopped flip-flopping like an Escher woodcut. She meant "like" as "as though", and she left off the object of "precedes" unnecessarily. That is one poor sentence.

The name precedes the child's reputation.
