The most valuable player designation/title/epithet

Phil has received the "Most Valuable Player" designation three times.

HI,

Is designation in the above interchangeable with title and epithet? If yes, are there sublte nuances among them? Thanks.

Epithets are now usually derogatory and the word would not be used here. Titles are assigned to winners of competitions and works OK here. A designation is more simply a distinguishing identification.
