The most that I like is....

Hello everyone.

This are my first questions since I have joined today.

I have 2 different questions:

1) Is it correct to say "The most that I like is ....." Of course I would say "What I like most is.... But I would like to know if the first one is grammatically wrong.

2)One of my students has written "The thing that I like most is the bedrooms" There is no agreement so I would tell him it is "bedroom". Anyway, if he wanted to say "bedrooms", how should I correct the sentences? Will it be "What I like the most were the bedrooms"?

"The thing that I like most is the bedrooms"

We often say things like this in everyday informal English. What we are thinking is something like

"The thing that I like most is the arrangement/design of the bedrooms."

In other words, we are thinking of 'the bedrooms' as a single feature.

If you decide you want to try explaining this kind of thing, you could explain why it sounds OK to say

'My favourite meal is fish and chips'.

ie we think of 'fish and chips' as a unit.

"What I like most are the bedrooms"

Yes, you can avoid the problem by saying something like this.

Will it be "What I like the most were the bedrooms"?-- Yes, or 'are the bedrooms', but there is nothing really wrong with the student's first sentence in informal English. We often speak that way when our brains are not sure how many 'things' we will like at the time we utter the verb; sometimes our brains also conceive of the idea of 'the group of bedrooms' as a single item, too.

1- He was referring to "the thing" = singular. "The bedrooms" refers to a group of bedroons in a house, hotel...

The most that I like is....
