The most?

"What she loved the most/most was going to theatre."

"It may happen that our friends turn their backs on us the moment we demand their help the most/most."

My poor sense of languages tells me that most would be correct in both cases; however, I think I am only deceived and the second option is right, not knowing why or what rule it can justify.

Thanks for any adequate explanation.Emotion: smile

English superlative structures and structures resembling them are very deceptive, illogical and inconsistent. That's where the beauty of the language is! As the relative superlative would be needed in all the languages I have studied in your examples, I would definitely include the article.

Thank you very much. I agree on the point that such structures are very misleading and inconsistent from my learner's point of view. Hopefully, I will master it as soon as possible!
