the more, the more

To my knowledge, it is not possible to change (a) into (b) without altering meaning. But, I don't know what actual meaning difference between them is. What do you think about it? 

(a) The more connected we are to you, the better we'll perform in
      the school.
(b) The more we are connected to you, the better we'll perform in
     the school.
