The missing 'the'

You live here and your husband lives in New York? What's the point of marriage?

I'd like to know if "the" should have been positioned before "marriage."

'marriage' seems to be used in a general sense there. I might interpret it as 'What's the point of marriage (if people don't live together)

The original sentence is still awkward in that context. I think I would just say

What's the point of marriage anyway?

If 'marriage' refers to their marriage, I would probably say

What's the point in you two being married ?
