the mind-boggling world of articles
Hello, could someone please explain the use of the article in these sentences? Thank you.
They are from Face2face Pre-intermediate. There is a lesson on articles and the lesson is about fashion. There is an article about Gianni Versace - fashion designer.
It starts " Gianni Versace was born in 1946 ....... " and then it comes to "He created a new perfume for men called Versace l´Homme in 1984."
Why "a"? It sounds natural. But WHY? Any grammatical explanation? Because, in my opinion, it is one specific perfume, not any perfume, but only one in the world, so we know which one although we talk about it for the first time in the article.
And if I rephrased the sentence, would "the" be bulletproof?
He created the Versace l´Homme perfume in 1984. ????
the same goes for two examples from the Face2face workbook. There is an article about two girls. It goes like this " ..... and then they wrote a book called Ready 2 Dress. After that, they made a TV programme called What Not to Wear. "
Again, why "a"? We know exactly which TV programme they made and which book they wrote.
In my opinion it is like saying "Yesterday I met the man who had burgled your house. He must have been realesed from prison." We know which man, even though I speak about him for the frist time.
