The mening of "wearing face"

This is the quote from Beatls lyrics:

Eleanor Rigby (Lennon/McCartney)
I look at all the lonely people I look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been Lives in a dream Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door Who is it for?

A grammar book written in my native language I have says "face" indicates "make-up" or "cosmetics" in here. They, however, don't mention it when I read the explanation about Eleanor Rigby's lyrics on the internet. They just say something like "wearing the face that she keeps in a jar" means "She bottles up her real emotions inside her not to look depressed and sad from people." if I understand correctly.

Can really "face" indicate "make-up" or "cosmetics"?

Thank you.
