The meeting finished or the meeting was finished?

Hello, could you please help with this verb?
What is right:
1. The meeting finished
2. The meeting was finished ?
Is there any rule regarding this issue?
And wha about the verb to END?
E.g. The conference ended or The conference was ended?

As for me passive form is more suitable in both cases, but I want know exactly because this is just my sixth sense Emotion: smile

Thank you in advance
