Assuming the further information has never been heard before in a conversation.

My dad worked for a British company in the 90s. They opened a / the branch in Moscow and we moved house.

Do you I need the or a?

I don't know if it's important. There's only one branch of this company in Moscow.

If the Moscow branch has not previously been mentioned and is not already familiar to the addressee then it should be "a". (In this case, the scenario of being previously mentioned or already familiar would not in any case fit the use of "worked for a British company" in the first sentence.)
