The meaning of Would in, "I wonder why he would retire after his sterling career...."

Teachers, would anyone please explain why the "would" was used here? I have no idea why the "would" has to be used :

"Gee, I wonder why he would retire after his sterling caree.."

He has made an announcement that he will retire. The speaker is wondering why he has this desire, wish or intention. Would expresses an intention, wish or choice. Another way to express this is:
I wonder why he chooses/wants to retire.....
