In the below sentence I'm not sure the meaning of 'the subject.'
It seems the meaning should be #1 or #5 in the Webster's Leaner's Dictionary.
But I can not pinpoint which one exactly.
1 : the person or thing that is being discussed or described : topic 5 : a person or animal that is used in an experiment, study, etc.
It's no secret that widely-used treatments were developed in studies on rats or that important early research leading to treatments for anxiety in humans was done on dogs, cats, and other species - but the subject doesn't come up a lot in conversation.
