The meaning of the 'secular' word

Hello.

I have the following sentence:

The secular cooling that must someday overtake our planet has already gone far indeed with our neighbour.

I'm reading 'The war of the worlds' by G. Wells.

Could you please explain this word to me, secular? It doesn't make sense if get it as a statement that's not related on any religion. One of the option of translation is 'eternal', 'everlasting'. But there is no any similar definition at the english dictionary.

Thank you in advance.
