The meaning of 'tears'

A song called "Lay Me Down" by Sam Smith has these lyrics:

...
No words can explain the way I'm missing you
Deny this emptiness, this hole that I'm inside
These tears, they tell their own story

Told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong
...
The boldfaced line starts at 56 seconds.

What is the meaning of "tears" here?

Did you hear the pronunciation of the word?
It sounded to me like /te?(r)/ as in "This sheet has a tear in it."

The pronunciation does seem slightly ambiguous now I listen again, but I think it must be the crying sort of tears.

Wouldn't it be possible to think of 'tears' as some sort of holes?

I think it's more likely to relate to "Told me not to cry" which follows. Also, without wishing anyone any personal offence, the lyrics are exceptionally banal and unimaginative, and, as such, the crying sort of "tears" is a more predictable wo
