The meaning of 'so'

As......... so.........

What is the meaning of 'so' in the following sentence?

* Just as the old have need of energy of youth, so the young have need of the experience of old age.

Edit. I suppose in this case you might say "conversely" rather than "similarly," since it has a strange twist.
On the other hand, "similarly" fits if you think of it as each group needing what the opposite group has, or what it cannot have.
