They are wrong uses of the word "fret", but the meaning is conveyed nonetheless. She agitated herself over him and then did not.

I'm sorry but I still don't understand the usage/meaning of 'after him' in the sentence.

She had fretted [after him].

Don't think of after him as a phrase. Think of fret after as a phrasal verb in the first sentence as fret for is a phrasal verb in the second. Does that help?
