the meaning of roll

Hello, everyone

Would you please read the following definition for roll:

"To move forward along a surface by revolving on an axis or by repeatedly turning over."

Source: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/roll+over

My question is: Shouldn't it be around, instead of on? What about about?

i.e. roll around/about an axis.

Thank you.
