the meaning of "frustrate"

Hello,

I'd like to know what this sentence means.

"The hometown team frustrated the visitors with their solid defence."

My understanding is as follows:

"The hometown team beat the team from other place because their defence was solid."

Or "the visitors" means "the audience"?

Top answer

Visitors is the other team. Frustrate does not mean beat; it means 'hinder or prevent (the efforts, plans, or desires) of'. Nevertheless, the result here was probably (but not necessarily) that the hometown team won.
