the meaning of preposition 'up'?

He is working at the chemical laboratory 'UP' at the hospital.

Why is preposition 'up' used in there?

"Up" is not needed.
The only possible point of using "up" is to indicate that the hospital is "up" (the street, the hill?) from where the speaker is.
