the meaning of past perfect

Hello there. Here is two sentence:"He told us that his wife had been a singer".I'd like to know, could his wife still be a singer at the moment of the speaking (when he told us). I think she could but some people tell me "no, she could not, the duration does not continue until now, it stops before something else in the past. What can you say?

Top answer

I'd like to know whether could his wife could have been a singer at the moment of the speaking (when he told us). As a native speaker, I would infer that his wife had given up her singing career a long time ago, maybe even before they were married.
