the meaning of outstrip

I am curious about how the word 'outstrip' comes to have the meaning of 'surpass' since the word 'strip' doesn't have any meaning of the sort.

For example 'outnumber' has the meaning of 'surpass in number.'

But in case of 'outstrip' I can figure out what to do with 'strip.'
