The meaning of "it is one method"

I found the following sentence in one of books that I've read. Though there is no complex vocabulary, I cannot understand the precise meaning of the sentence. The confusing part for me is "it is one method". Therefore, I would really appreciate it, if someone could paraphrase the sentence to understand it properly.

New advances are being made all the time and it is one method for detecting and monitoring the progress of hurricanes.
