The meaning of highs and lows

I am reading an article about Mercantour national park in France. It says "Mercantour means 'limit' or 'boundary' but the park manages to defy both with its dramatic highs and lows. " Could anyone tell me the meaning of "highs and lows" here? Thank you!

I assume it refers to different elevations of the terrain in the park, most likely mountains and valleys, both of which supposedly make a big impression on park visitors.
