The meaning of forgiveness

Forgiveness ‘transforms the “confession of sins”’ 'ultimately into a “confession of faith”:’ 'from an act of self-serving self-accusation to an act of testimony and collective affirmation’ 'of a new beginning.’

Does that (=forgiveness) mean 'being forgiven' rather than 'a forgiving?'
