The meaning of 'for good or ill' in sentence

Once the boss gives us an order, for good or ill, we must follow.

I was wondering if the meaning of 'for good or ill' here is whether the order is good or bad or does it mean that whether the act of bosses giving us an order is good or bad?

I feel like the former is the meaning of it. Or either one is possible, depending of context? What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance.
