The meaning of "for cudgelling our way"?

Please look at the following sentence.

"In everyday life we cheerfully use language as a blunt instrument for
cudgelling our way through the cut and thrust of events around us"

[1] Could you tell me what "for cudgelling our way" means? I couldn't guess it.

[2] What is the meaning of "cut" there? I think the meaning of "thrust" is "point". I couldn't think of the meaning of "cut".
