He pushed a nail through his hand. Drive "something" into "something" else. Get it? Like a screwdriver?

In this context, it literally means what is stated. To 'drive a nail' is to hit a nail into or through an object such as a wall or piece a paper. In this case it was his hand.

Not to a beginner in English. Consider that in all likelihood the student has only been exposed to uses like 'drive a car', 'drive a truck', or 'drive a limousine'. Given only that exposure, 'drive a nail' probably doesn't make literal sense. Fortunately, you went on to explain it.

"driving" in this case refers to force being applied, so the 'driven nail' has been pushed into something.
