The meaning of "compete along emotional lines"

Dose your brand compete along
emotional lines?

This sentence is from an article talking
about marketing.

I am wonder what the prase,"emotional
lines",really means and how a brand compete along it.

Can the preposition, "along", be in
stead of "with"?

'With' cannot be subsituted for 'along'. 'Along...lines' is a fixed collocation.

Mine doesn't seem any better than yours-- it is a hard phrase to paraphrase, isn't it? 'In terms of' pretty much says it. Further search now gives me the Free Dictionary version:

along the lines of something also along those lines

similar in type-- 'I can't remember exactly what words he used but it was something along those lines.'
