The meaning of 'certain'.

There are two meanings of word 'certain': sure about something or not explicitly. I realize that these two ones are conflicted. So, how can we know which one applied in a context. Because the meaning of it will be very different.

The same situation of this is conjunction 'apart from'. It also has two meanings: aditionally and except for. And I don't know when it means 'adtionally' or 'except for'. These two clearly have opposite meanings.

Thanks for your explaination!

I disagree that "certain" can mean "not explicitly". While "certain" can have multiple meanings, the context will usually tell you what is meant and the same is true of "apart from". Apart from basketball, he (also) plays football.

hi Ivanhr,
yes, based on the context we can seperately understand multiple words. And the problem is that as the time we're speaking in a very fast way, we take our time to consider the situation and know the meaning of those but perhaps we couldn't keep up with our partner.

Thanks for your link, Ivanhr.
About my problem above, could you advise me some?

Just like I said in my first post, context is everything. I suggest that you analyze the examples I've given you regarding the use of "apart from" and then if you still can't tell the difference between the two meanings (of "apart from), you may try to explain to us what exactly you don't understand.
