The meaning of "by" .

Hi,

Could you tell me the meaning of "by" in the sentence below? Why don't we use from instead? Thank you for your answer.

He buys paintings by local artists and exports them around the world.

"By" here indicates that the paintings are made by local artists whereas had it been "from" then it would have meant that he buys paintings from them
