The meaning of blow over in this sentence

Hi.
The story was in the newspapers for a while, but it soon blew over and nobody heard anything more about it.

What other word/words can I use instead of blow over without loosing any meaning?

Yes, it means diminished.
It started off as a literal reference to storms, but now it's also used figuratively (as in your example).
