The meaning of ‘as’

Hello, everyone,

Owen-Smith interprets the fact that the great majority of known Ice Age kill sites involved mammoths or mastodons as evidence that they were humans’ preferred prey. There were plenty of smaller animals around to sustain them if they couldn’t bag a megamammal, so human hunting pressure did not let up as elephant numbers dwindled.“

While I think the ‘as’ above means ‘because’, is there any possibility the same is understood as the meaning of ‘though’, which leads a concessive clause in that context?

Your comment would be always and really appreciated.
