The meaning of 'administer'

Guy A asks, "What exactly is the doctor going to do if you're being poison?"

Guy B replies, "He'll administer a shot to slow down my heartbeat"

Does, 'administer' mean receiving some sort of drug from a doctor's prescription in this context?

Thank you
