The meaning of a senctence

I read from CNN just now that "George Takei likely went where no critic of a Supreme Court justice has gone before". I don't get the meaning of this sentence. What does "went" mean here? Can someone paraphrase this sentence?

Thank you for your reply. Could you please make another sentence using this sentence pattern? I just don't get the grammar and the usage of "go" in this sentence.

It is a play on two phrases:

1- "To boldly go where no man has gone before." This phrase originated with, and was made famous by, the TV series Star Trek.
