The meaning of a quotation

The quotation below is from This Book Is Not For Sale by Jarod Kintz.

When I compliment you, I compliment myself, because I am who I associate with. ? Jarod Kintz

Can you explain what this quote implicates?

This is my thought I had when I read it.

When I compliment you, I'm not complimenting you, actually I'm complimenting an aspect of myself in you. So don't be so pleased about it. (Because when I compliment you I'm trying to make you like me by cheering one of my aspect in you.)

Regards.
