The Man who would be King

There is a short story The Man who would be King by Rudyard Kipling. Would it be wrong if the article ''a'' or the is used in front of King?

I think if you want to use "the King" you need to say the country or whatever he will be king of.. :)

In the context of the story, totally wrong. Th story is about a specific man who wanted to become a king - it is "The Man [this particular and very specific man] who Would be King"

To my knowledge, you don't use an article after, for example, the verb 'be' with posts and titles which only one person can have at a time.
Therefore, 'He is King' insted of 'He is a King'.

Yes. There are certain verbs with which an article is omitted. With at least 'be, become, as, select, elect, make and appoint', there will be no article with words such as president, King and Queen. As a result, for example, 'As president I promise...' or 'I was appointed Mayor'. If, on the other hand, the post or title appears alone, a definite article is needed. That is, '*** save the King' or
