The majority of + collective noun

Hi! 1. Is it always correct to treat it as singular, i.e., "The majority of my family/group thinkS/speakS ...''?
2. If the phrase is modified to "The majority of my family/group MEMBERS ...'', should the verb still be used in a singular form (i.e., thinkS/speakS)?
