The maid

Hi there,

I've read the following:

We arrived at the family's mansion. The maid opened the door; the family was there.

This maid has not been introduced before, so it's the first time she is mentioned. Why did the writer use the definite article ("the maid")? I think it's because the maid is a bit like "the fridge" - the writer thinks every mansion has a maid and there is only one.
1. Does that make sense?
2. And I am assuming you can also say "a maid" in that context to introduce her?

I would appreciate your help!

Thanks,
Doris

Yes. It makes sense. The underlying assumption is "If you have a mansion, you have a maid".
