The machine will malfunction if its internal temperature becomes too high. Be sure not to block the intake and exhaust vents.

What does will mean? Is it wrong to say The machine malfunctions if...?

No, not really. You can also replace the "if" with "when" or "whenever" and the meaning will still remain the same.
