The loss of people

Hi all,
Could you please tell me if this sentence is correct?

The loss of people was going on throughout the World Wars.

I want to say that at the beginning of the 20th century there were less and less people in this country and this situation continued during both World Wars...

"Loss" doesn't quite catch your meaning.

You could say "the decline in population continued".

Should be fewer and fewer people (countable).
