The long-dreaded Saxon

Which one is correct, and why?

1. This move should increase confidence on the sides of both purchasers' and vendors'.

2. This move should increase confidence on the sides of both purchasers and vendors.

I realize the sentence is better with just '...confidence of both purchasers and vendors,' but I want to know whether the apostrophe should be used in the above examples. Thank you.
