The lonely resources?

We are rapidly destroying the resource we have by which all people can survive and prosper.
  1. lone B. individual C. lonely D. alone
I know that the answer can’t be “B.” The key is C. lonely. I don’t understand why.

I really don’t know how to use “lone” & “alone” except that the former is an adj & the latter is both an adjective & an adverb. Who can help me out? Thanks a bunch.

The key may be misspelled. It should be "only," not "lonely."
