The lock will open as long as I am within two of the correct number.

I came across this problem and I couldn't understand the meaning of the underlined sentence.
Could you please enlighten me on that?

"I have a lock (with password numbered from 1 through 60) for which I do not remember the combination. However, since it is so old the customer service hotline said the lock will open as long as I am within two of the correct number. How many combinations do I need to test in order to open the lock?"

Any help would be much appreciated and thanks.

Clive,

You're so right! So testing the numbers 3 and 8, it will cover the range from 1 to 10 and so on...
Thanks!
You're very helpful and incredibly amazing!

Hi,

or to the whole number (eg 317 referring to 315 / 316 / 318 / 319 ).
