The little fellow "AS"

One of the English words that troubles me the most is the little fellow "AS". Below is a sample paragraph quoted from an article:

"The giants had been expelled from the mountain; but they had only withdrawn to the neighboring cities of Philistia (Joshua 11:22). Thence they had, as must be inferred from the text here, returned and reoccupied Hebron."

My Question
What grammar role does the "as" play in the above phrase highlighted in pink?

Well, it seems to me, that "as" is functioning as a subject, a pronoun, and even an objective complement all at the same time.

I'm totally confused.

Can someone kindly share some light with me here? Thank you.

Dear Marius:

Thanks for your quick response.

I'm not an English-native speaker. I'm from Asia. When reading a similar context as the referenced example, does every English-native speaker "automatically" know that it should read as

(in) the way/manner that must be inferred from ....

As a non-native, you must consult good dictionaries (both in your language and English-English) and learn as many of the various possible definitions of a word as possible.

The more you read good fiction, the more automatic your recognition of the meaning which applies in each case will be.

The same is valid for the native-English speakers which want to expand their vo
