The list

Teachers,
A quick question for you.
"At the back of the book you will find a list of the references that I used".
I have not introduced the list before, so "a list" is proper and grammatical. However, if there is only one list, can I equally say:
"At the back of the book you will find the list of the references that I used".
Or will that be wrong if i haven't mentioned it before?
