The limping horse run for spruts? ;)

Hi there,

Could you please help me to understand what the words in bold mean? I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Mary

The horses run for spurts of increasing speed.

Lameness is certainly the most frequent condition but it is not necessarily the absolute cause of poor performance because limping horses—if warmed up properly—may cross the finish line with fairly good results.
