The let-loose//released sidewalk pups

Sooner or later, the let-loose sidewalk pups will cross the streets. Running, they will run into each other.

Hi,

The above is also from "Loser." I can find "let-loose" nowhere in my dictionary. Does it amount to "freed" and "released?" Thanks.

"let-loose sidewalk pups" means "sidewalk pups that have been let loose". So, if "pups" has the literal meaning of young dogs then, yes, it would mean they have been released and allowed to run around freely. )

(I say "if" because it's possible that the whole sentence is figurative, and not talking about dogs at all.)
