The less known use of the word "save"

Hello everyone.

I need some clarification. In a self-reflection piece that I wrote about a week ago, I included this sentence:

"... I have absolutely ZERO nursing or medical experience (save for amateurish assistance I have provided my grandfather in his clinic when I was younger)..."

My professor encircled the word "save". I don't understand. This is a legitimate use of the word!

Even the great Professor Tolkien used it all the time!

e.g. "The story is cast in terms of a good side, and a bad side, beauty against ruthless ugliness, tyranny against kingship, moderated freedom with consent against compulsion that has long lost any object save mere power, and so on.... "


Please enlighten me.

I've seen it used as "except" in numerous places. The dictionary agrees:
